This photo from Newsweek looks almost identical to the pit the night we were there, except of
course that we were down on the ground and the equipment has moved around. My guess is
that this was taken from 2 World Financial Center, or perhaps 3 World Financial Center, the
building that was pierced with a 6 story high piece of steelwork from the North Tower.
You can see on the left the wall that is leaning on the Federal Building behind it. As you look
up at the outside wall structure that is left, the arched pieces stood at about the 30th floor,
and each of those little waffle like rectangles higher up represents a whole story of the
building. The white crane in the middle is the 45 story crane brought in from Ohio that I wrote
about. Towards the bottom left where the water is spraying, are the central core beams and
elevator bank that I described standing in front of. At the top of the picture to the right of the
white crane is the leaning Millennium Hotel. Directly behind the white crane is the still
standing shell of the 5 World Trade Center building. At center right is the South Tower area
that they were trying to shore up the night we were there. It looks as if the fire is still burning
underground and you can see the bursts of smoke coming up in places as well as the steam
from the water.
